ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Maryland officials will be holding a groundbreaking for what will be the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Byway and State Park.
Gov. Martin O'Malley is scheduled to attend the event adjacent to the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge on Saturday. U.S. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar and other officials also are scheduled to attend.
Tubman was born in Dorchester County. She spent nearly 30 years there as a slave before escaping in 1849. She later led hundreds of slaves to freedom as part of the anti-slavery resistance network known as the Underground Railroad.
