GEORGETOWN, De.- This is an important week for Delmarva farmers, with Friday being the deadline to purchase crop insurance.

Last year, dry and hot weather conditions hurt farmers all over the peninsula. Farmer Donnie Collins lost part of his crop last summer and says crop insurance is a necessity.

"[Crop] insurance is a great thing to have. It's a great way to protect your bottomline," says Collins, who owns a farm in Millsboro.

Collins has bought crop insurance every season for the past 15 years from King Crop Insurance in Georgetown. The three King sisters, who run the company, agree this is one of the busiest weeks of the year.

"It's a crazy time of the year for us, a very busy week. It's human nature to wait, and they wait till the last 5 days to do it," says Donna King.

Last year, the crop insurance industry paid out close to $35 million to farmers on Delmarva.
