Capitals Acquire Chay Genoway from Minnesota

ARLINGTON, Va.– The Washington Capitals have acquired defenseman Chay Genoway from Minnesota in exchange for a conditional seventh-round draft pick in 2014, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced Thursday.

Genoway, 26, has recorded 19 points (four goals, 15 assists) and a plus-11 rating in 53 games with Houston of the American Hockey League (AHL). He ranked second amongst Houston defensemen in points and goals and ranked second on the team in plus/minus. The native of Morden, Manitoba, has collected 55 points (11 goals, 44 assists) in 125 career AHL games with Houston. Genoway has appeared in one career NHL game with Minnesota, registering an assist on April 7, 2012, against Phoenix.

The 5-foot-9, 177-pound blueliner was originally signed by Minnesota as an undrafted free agent on April 12, 2011. Genoway posted 127 points (26 goals, 101 assists) in 168 career games with the University of North Dakota, helping the team advance to the 2011 Frozen Four. He served as North Dakota's captain his junior and senior seasons and was named a First Team All-WCHA in 2011 and 2009.

Genoway earned AHCA All-America Second Team honors and was named WCHA Defensive Player of the Year in 2009 after being named North Dakota's Rookie of the Year in 2007.

Genoway will report to Hershey.
