Delaware General Assembly Considering Minimum Wage Hike

Posted: Updated:

DOVER, Del.- Senate Bill 6 would raise the minimum wage in Delaware to $8 an hour in July 2013 and then to $8.75 an hour in July 2014.

But some local business owners are worried they will not be able to afford the increase.

"I might have to lay off somebody, there will be, I won't be able to afford so many people or employees in my operation," said Eleni Kotsifis, the owner of Niko's in Dover.

She worries the minimum wage increase will hurt small businesses like the one she owns.

"It's not going to help business owners, having to apply this increase," she said.

Floyd Bradshaw, the chef at Niko's, said he understands where business owners are coming from, but added, "As an employee I think it's long overdue. They should have considered it a long time ago."

Senate Bill 6 is currently in committee but a vote is expected by the end of the month. If it is approved then, in addition to the two Increases, the minimum wage in delaware will rise periodically with the cost of living adjustment.
