Virginia's Oldest Retired Trooper Turns 100

ROANOKE, Va. (AP) - Virginia's oldest retired state trooper just celebrated his 100th birthday.

The March 5 occasion was marked by the city of Salem and the Virginia State Police Association, which presented John Burrow with a plaque at a family party last weekend. John Rowles of the association said its members congratulate Burrow on the milestone, and for his service to Virginia.

Burrow retired in 1973 after 34 years. More than a decade of that was spent as captain of the then-fledgling Salem division.

Burrow's service was interrupted by service in the Navy during World War II. He worked as a transport sailor in the Pacific, where he witnessed kamikaze pilots plunge toward ships, before rejoining the state police.
