MIDDLETOWN, Del.- Delaware State Police say a Port Penn man is dead after he crashed his SUV in Middletown.

Troopers said the crash occurred at around 1:39 a.m. Tuesday, as 42-year-old Harry C. Spohn drove a 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe east on Bayview Road. Investigators said that for an undetermined reason, approximately one quarter-mile west of Betts Road, the vehicle traveled off of the south edge of the roadway and struck a concrete pole. The vehicle continued traveling east while rotating in a counterclockwise direction, and the passenger side of the vehicle struck a large tree.

Police said Spohn, who was not properly restrained, was ejected from the vehicle, which continued traveling eastwardly, ultimately coming to rest on Bayview Road.

Spohn was pronounced dead at the scene.

Bayview Road was closed for approximately three hours as troopers investigated and cleared the crash. The DSP Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing its investigation into the accident.
