NEWARK, Del. – The outcomes were split Thursday afternoon as the University of Delaware men's tennis team flew by Lafayette University with a 5-0 victory while the women's squad struggled in a 5-2 loss at Navy.

At the Winning Touch Indoor Tennis Center in Allentown, Pa., Troy Beneck improved to 14-5 in top-flight singles action with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Brandon Goldstein.

With a 6-2, 6-3 win against Scott Gelbman, Adam Lawton picked up his second straight victory in the No. 2 spot to improve to 10-2 on the season in the flight.

Nolan Gelman defeated Gavin Studner by a score of 6-2, 6-0 in the third flight while Evan Andrews wrapped up singles action with a 7-6, 6-2 victory over Chriss Matturri.

In the lone doubles match of the afternoon, Jason Derene and Mike Furr teamed up to take a 6-3, 6-3 win against Jake Lazer and Brian Stefanowicz.

With the win, the Blue Hens improve to 3-5 overall on the year while Lafayette drops to 2-4 for the season.

At Navy's Brigade Sports Complex, the Delaware women fell early and were unable to make a comeback in the 5-2 deficit.

"Navy is a strong and deep squad," remarked UD head coach Laura Travis.  "In spite of the loss, this group of players is moving forward.  We will stay focused to the progress and chip away at the details that need work."

The Mids (17-3) swept the Blue Hens (5-2) in doubles play to take the team point and an early 1-0 advantage.

Navy immediately went up in the first three singles matches before Nataliya Naumova defeated Logan Antill 6-2, 0-6, 6-4 for the first win of the afternoon for the Hens.

Dorothy Safron followed with a win of her own as she went 6-4, 5-7, 10-3 over Darien Sears.

Kim Milla had a season-best eight game winning streak snapped with a 6-3, 6-2 loss to Katie Porter in the sixth flight.

Both the Delaware men and women return to the court Sunday as the Hens host Mount St. Mary's at the Elkton Indoor Courts at 6 p.m. This match was originally scheduled for Monday, March 25 but was moved up due to weather and scheduling issues.
