CHESTERTOWN, MD – Host Washington College scored seven times in the bottom of the fifth inning to turn a 2-1 lead into a 9-1 cushion as the Shoremen topped visiting New Jersey City University, 12-3, on Saturday afternoon at Athey Baseball Park in non-conference baseball action. The Shoremen are now 8-7 on the year, while the Gothic Knights fall to 7-5.
The Shoremen took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning when sophomore Dennis Thomas (Baltimore, MD/Archbishop Curley) singled home senior Joe Willis (Mullica Hill, NJ/Kingsway Regional) for the game's first run with one out.
New Jersey City University tied it in the top of the fourth inning when Matthew Wagner singled up the middle with two away to drive in Andrew Rivera to knot the score at 1-1. The Shoremen took the lead for good in the last of the fourth when freshman Bryan Baquer (Woodbridge, VA/Osbourn Park) scored on a base hit down the right field line by freshman Brian Quadrino (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown East) to put WC ahead, 2-1.
The Shoremen put the game out of reach with a seven-run last of the fifth to take a 9-1 lead. With the bases loaded and one out, sophomore Scott Matthews (Goshen, NY/Don Bosco Prep (NJ) singled to right to plate both Willis and senior Sean Connole (Mt. Airy, MD/St. John's Catholic) to make it 4-1. With the bases loaded again and one away, senior Tyler Cotterell (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) doubled over the third base bag to score both Thomas and Matthews to make it 6-1. The next batter Quadrino, tripled home Baquer and Cotterell to increase the lead to 8-1. The scoring the frame was capped when Willis doubled down the right field line to score Quadrino with two outs. In the inning, there were two intentional walks, one each to Thomas and Baquer.
Washington scored three times in the bottom of the seventh to make it 12-1 before NJCU scored twice in the top of the ninth to provide the final margin.
Cotterell was 3-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored to lead the Shoremen offense which had 12 hits in the win. Quadrino was 2-for-3 with three RBI, while Willis was 2-for-3 with three runs scored. Baquer scored three times, Matthews drove in two and junior Nick Marinelli (Ellicott City, MD/Marriotts Ridge) had two hits and two stolen bases. On the mound, senior pitcher Kyle Aldrich (Warren, NJ/Watchung Hills Regional) got the win to improve to 2-1. He went 6 2/3 innings, surrendering just four hits and one earned run, while walking three and striking out three.
For the Gothic Knights, who had seven hits, Michael Martucci went 2-for-5 with an RBI for the guests. On the hill, Kevin DeMauro took the loss as he falls to 1-2. He allowed nine runs, six earned, on 10 hits with three walks in 4 1/3 innings.
The Gothic Knights committed three errors, while the Shoremen had two errors in the game.
Washington travels to the nation's capital, Washington, DC, on Tuesday afternoon for a 3:30 p.m. game at Gallaudet University in non-conference action.
