Comments on Virginia's Abortion Regulations Delivered

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Abortion-rights supporters say they've delivered more than 3,600 public comments opposing Virginia's new abortion clinic regulations to the Virginia Board of Health.
The activists took the comments to the state health department's Richmond headquarters Thursday. The board is scheduled to take a final vote on the regulations April 12.
The General Assembly mandated the regulations, which would require all Virginia abortion clinics to meet the same strict building standards as newly constructed hospitals. Those standards cover things like doorway widths and room sizes. Opponents say the regulations would require expensive renovations that would put most of the state's 20 existing abortion clinics out of business.
The Board of Health already has given preliminary approval to the regulations, which took effect on an emergency basis on Jan. 1, 2012.
