Blue Hen Fever Sweeping First State

Posted:

DOVER, Del. (WBOC) - Excitement is building across the First State as the University of Delaware women's basketball team prepares for Saturday's Sweet 16 game.

The Lady Blue Hens take on the University of Kentucky Wildcats. The game tips off just after noon on ESPN.

There are lots of ways to see the game and show support for the ladies in blue and gold.

When UD All-American Elena Delle Donne takes the court in Bridgeport, Conn., Delaware alum Jim Purcell will be watching.

"I'm looking forward to tomorrow," Purcell said. "This has been a tremendous season for the women's basketball team at the University of Delaware."

He's going to Buffalo Wild Wings in Dover. It is one of three sites downstate for official watch parties. The other two sites are in Dewey Beach and Seaford.

Lots of fans have been looking to wear their support. Boscov's at the Dover Mall has a large display of gear right in front of the door.

"Sales have picked up since the girls basketball team has been in the tournament," said Joe Belanger, who manages the department where the clothes are. "In fact, just this morning we received another shipment, and customers were requesting UD clothing.

And the fact that this is the women's basketball team may be impacting what clothes people are coming to the store to get.

"Actually, we got some women's T-shirts in this morning. That's something I haven't had in the past."

Purcell is already decked out in UD gear. And he's got high hopes for the game.

"I'll take Delaware by 4."

SEAFORD, De.- Another major store is closing in Delaware. This time it’s the Sears in Seaford. This comes shortly after news broke that the Kmart store in Dover was closing. Both stores will be closing its doors this summer. It’s all part of changes coming to the Sears Holding Corporation. Customers were not too happy about their local store closing. "I hate it.
