DEWEY BEACH, Del. (AP) - The Army Corps of Engineers developed a plan more than 40 years ago to reduce erosion at the Indian River Inlet bridge. Now the plan may finally become reality.

A  funding bill for Sandy relief includes 100 percent funding to rebuild original design conditions for a damaged site.

The Army Corps proposed a massive dune along the coastal highway bridge, and the plan received congressional approval in 1968. Now damage from Superstorm Sandy may spur action for the area that often floods during storms.

The proposal is to pump 500,000 cubic yards of sand to create a beach at least 50 feet wide and a dune averaging 16 feet high. It could give the inlet more storm protection, rivaling Rehoboth, Dewey and Bethany beaches.
