PRINCESS ANNE, MD - It was 1963 when Alberto Santio set the University of Maryland Eastern Shore record in the discus. Dillon Simon broke the 50-year record Saturday in the Virginia Invitational. Simon tossed a 53.65-meter discus to set the Hawks new record. Teammate Lexia Robinson tied her record from the 2012 conference championship in the discus with a 43.91-meter toss.
Imani Cox and Robinson finished third and fifth, respectively, in the shot put. Cox tossed a 14.82-meter put, while Robinson finished with 14.05-meter toss. Cox finished seventh in the discus throw.
In the sprint events, Gayon Evans, Lenora Guion-Firmin and Petra Kubesova each won gold in their respective events. Evans ran an 11.70-second time in the 100-meter dash and finished second in the 200-meter. Teammate Guion-Firmin posted a 23.60 in the 200-meter dash, and ran 53.40 in the 400-meter dash.
Javon Spencer ran a 10.76 in the 100-meter dash finals, while teammate Hackeem Harris finished fifth in the 200-meter dash in 22.01 seconds. Aaron Chatman had the Hawks' best finish in the 400-meter dash with time of 48.94.
Kubesova posted a 10:41.61 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase to mark both a school record and gold medal finish. Emilie Ducados posted a fourth place finish in the 800-meter run in 2:12.26, while Shantol Hemley finished 2:13.60.
