In Va. 1-Day Session, Adieu for Parting Lawmakers

RICHMOND, Va. (AP)- An august roster of Virginia legislators, including the longest-serving lawmaker in Virginia history, have made what's likely their final appearances in the House and Senate on a day of long and longing farewells.

After 52 sessions, 84-year-old Del. Lacey Putney took his final bow at his House desk, remembering what he called "a great ride" since a time when lawmakers had no offices, no staffs and no microphones at their desks.

Del. Joe Johnson, at age 81 and after 28 House sessions, recalled how in the 1960s his young son asked him to stay in Washington County rather than head for the Capitol 320 miles away.

In all, eight delegates are retiring, including 83-year-old Del. Bob Tata after 30 sessions and 74-year-old Del. Jim Scott after 22 sessions.
