RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Labor statistics show the percentage of Virginia workers paid an hourly wage at or below the federal minimum standard declined to 6.8 percent in 2012 from 7.1 percent the year before.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics said Wednesday about 1.8 million Virginia workers were paid at hourly rates last year.

Of those being paid at or below the minimum wage of $7.25 per hour in Virginia, 55 percent were women.

Hourly employees in Virginia earned an average of $12.73 per hour in 2012, up from $12.20 the year before. The national average was $12.80.

Nationally, 4.7 percent of hourly workers were paid at or below the minimum wage in 2012.

President Barack Obama has proposed raising the minimum wage to $9 an hour. It was last raised in 2009.
