Princess Anne Car Chase Suspect Drowns

Posted: Updated:

PRINCESS ANNE, Md.- Police are hoping to learn more about a fatal car chase in Somerset County, but family members also want to know what happened to Julius Chandler Jr. on Saturday night.

"I was upset. It upset me," said Chandler's relative, Iva Brooker. "Because I was getting ready to go to church, when I heard it that morning."

Police said Chandler was speeding and swerving down the road when they tried to pull him over. According to police, the pursuit moved to the backroads, until the car stopped and the suspect jumped out of his car, and tired to swim across the water.  But he did not make it that far.

"But they say he's a swimmer," said Lawrence Matthews-Dorman Jr. "He was a good swimmer."

Princess Anne Police Chief Scott Keller said the water's temperature was unbearable.

"Had he not drowned and remained in the water, he would not be able to survive anyway," Keller said.

The freezing temperatures did not keep police from going after him.

"And they didn't worry about their own safety at all," Keller added.

But they could not reach him.

"He was a very nice person and all and he always keep you laughing and everything," Brooker recalled.

But why did Chandler flee the police and jump in the river?

"It's not the first time. There has been another time. He was running from the police a couple weeks ago," Brooker said.

Keller said he cannot believe a couple of traffic violations would be the reason behind this fatal car chase.
