ACCOMAC, Va. (AP/WBOC)- Court documents say the man who confessed to setting the latest arson in Accomack County used a rag from his auto shop to light the abandoned home on fire.

Charles R. Smith III, 38, and his girlfriend Tonya S. Bundick, 40, have each been charged with arson and conspiracy to commit arson in the incident, which occurred Monday night in Melfa. Virginia State Police say the Parksley couple is responsible for all but a handful of the 77 arsons set in Accomack County since mid-November. Additional charges are expected.

Smith is a former volunteer firefighter who owns an auto body shop in the Tasley community. According to search warrants released Thursday, Smith told authorities he tore a piece from a towel in his shop to light the fire. The warrants say police watched him set the fire.
