Facebook Posts Made by Accomack Arson Suspects

Posted: Updated:

ACCOMACK COUNTY, Va.-"Arsons in Accomack" is a Facebook group devoted to raising awareness and stopping the fires in Accomack County.  A Facebook profile appeared to be shared by arson suspects Tonya S. Bundick and Charles R. Smith III was a member of the group and made comments about the arsons.

"Arsons in Accomack" has nearly 800 members.  One of them is named Teechar Tobannounced - a Facebook profile shared by Bundick and Smith.

"I think it is kind of ridiculous that she would be a part of any of the pages, especially during a felony arson investigation," said Josh Barfield of Parksley. "Maybe that just my speculation, but I wouldn't be a part of any of the pages if I knew they were looking for me."

Bundick, 40, and Smith, 38, were arrested on Tuesday following a traffic stop and charged with one count each of arson and conspiracy to commit arson after a fire set in Melfa on Monday night.

Many of the Facebook posts by Teechar Tobannounced were made in mid-March.  In one instance, the group's administrator asked for a discussion topic for the day.  Smith's and Bundick's profile responded with "things we the community can do to prevent the next strike."  Further down the page another comment read, "I have often wondered if arsonist is reading and laughs."

Allen Barfield is from Parksley, the hometown of Bundick and Smith, and has his own ideas on why the comments were posted.

"That's the only reason I can think that she would come out - an act of desperation.  To try and create some doubt.  She wasn't doing it from the beginning, only once it had gotten a little heated, we got all this attention down here.  They should have probably laid low a while," said Barfield.

Smith and Bundick are due in Accomack County court on May 6.
