Driver Dies From Injuries Sustained in Ellendale Crash

Posted: Updated:

ELLENDALE, Del.- Delaware State Police say a driver involved in a late Saturday night single-vehicle crash in Ellendale has died from his injuries.

The crash happened around 10:30 p.m. Saturday. Police said 63-year-old Kenneth O. Grinnell of Millsboro was driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee southbound on South DuPont Boulevard (US 113), just north of McColleys Chapel Road, when for an unknown reasons the Jeep left the west side of the roadway.

Troopers said that when Grinnell tried to correct the issue, the Jeep re-entered the roadway and then back to the right before traveling off the west side of the roadway where it struck a tree.

The impact caused the vehicle to rotate in a clockwise manner and continue southbound where it hit a ditch and became airborne before coming to a stop, police said.

Investigators said Grinnell, who was not properly restrained, was thrown from the Jeep upon impact.

He was transported to Milford Memorial Hospital before being flown to Christiana Medical Center, where he died as a result of his injuries early Monday morning.

The DSP Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing its investigation into the incident.
