Former Bethany Beach Official Cleared of Sex Charge

Posted: Updated:

GEORGETOWN, Del. (AP/WBOC)- A former Bethany Beach public safety director who resigned after being charged with inappropriately touching a woman at a Christmas party has been cleared of criminal charges.

A Sussex County jury on Thursday acquitted 62-year-old Ralph J. Mitchell Jr., a former state trooper.

Mitchell was charged with third-degree unlawful sexual contact following an incident that occurred December 2011 at Smitty McGee's Restaurant on Lighthouse Road in Selbyville.

Mitchell was accused of placing his hand inside a female co-worker's shirt. He testified that he was simply trying to drop an ice cube down the 42-year-old woman's cleavage as a joke.

Mitchell had served as Bethany Beach's public safety director for 11 years prior to his arrest. He resigned from his post shortly thereafter.
