NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - Virginia's chief medical examiner has stepped down.

Dr. Leah Bush wants more flexibility to care for her parents. Her 81-year-old mother had a stroke last year. Her father is 86.

Dr. William Gormley will serve as acting chief medical examiner until a replacement is hired. Bush will take his position as an assistant chief medical examiner for the central district in Richmond. She plans to retire in 2014.

The 57-year-old Bush served as chief medical examiner for five years. She previously served as the assistant chief medical examiner of the Norfolk-based Tidewater district for 18 years.
