Mortgage Assistance Available for Manufactured Homes in Del.

Posted: Updated:

DOVER, Del.- It can be tricky trying to get mortgage help if you own a manufactured home in Delaware.

"They are actually registered through the DMV so for them to get a regular mortgage like anyone else, they're considered a car and they're not considered a homeowner," said Rep. Valerie Longhurst, D-District 15.

And that makes it harder to get mortgage assistance if homeowners run into trouble.

"A lot of times a lot of elderly people live in these homes," Edwin Speraw said. "If they lose a spouse or something, then it becomes catastrophic to them."

The manufactured housing assistance program aims to help people, with benefits up to $5,000.

"$5,000 doesn't seem like a lot but it will seem like a lot to the person who is trying to pay their rent or mortgage, so it at least gives them an opportunity," Speraw said.
