Lewes Man Snaps Photo of Boston Blast

Posted:

LEWES, De.- A Sussex County man is responsible for shooting an iconic photo of the first bomb explosion at the Boston Marathon on Monday.

Jack Vassalotti of Lewes says he had his camera out at the time of the first of two explosions. He was watching from the finish line in support of his friends who were running in the event, some of whom live in Rehoboth Beach.

Vassalotti says he snapped the photo just moments after the blast.

"I was able to just turn from the position I was in and capture the plume of smoke as it went up," said Vassalotti. "People started running after I took that picture and I was right next to the barricade by the street, so I held on to it and just yelled to people to stay calm."

Minute later, Jack called his wife Donna, who was at their home in Lewes.

"[Jack] said 'I was standing less than a block away from an explosion. It looked like a bomb blew out the side of a building,'" said Donna.

Jack will return home on Monday and when he does, Donna said she'll be greeting him with extra hugs and kisses.

New Waterfront Hotel Breaks Ground in O.C., Part 2

The location of a new waterfront hotel that recently broke ground in Ocean City is raising some eyebrows with neighbors in the downtown area.

The Cambria Hotel is being built in the vacant lot that sits just north of the Route 50 drawbridge, meaning it will be one of the first things drivers see headed into town.

Brian Plimack, who lives just behind the development, said the hotel is too much of a drastic change to the town's skyline.
