Rockfish Trophy Season is Near

Posted:

STEVENSVILLE, Md. - Everyone wants to get their hands on a rockfish but it's harder than you think. The rockfish season starts Sat. April 20th and for charter boat companies, this is the time to strike while the iron is hot.

"This is the big season for us, the first 30-45 days is probably the biggest part of our year," said charter boat Captain Jeff Ruth.

"We do probably about 20 percent of our business in the first 4 weeks of the year," said charter boat captain Rich Schott.

Rockfish trophy season is a special time in Maryland.

"We have people call all the time that want to get out on the bay in the spring," said Ruth. "They want the opportunity to catch a really big fish."

The start of the season is still two days away, but Chesapeake Sport Fishing is all booked from now until the trophy season ends on May 15th, but the busier the better for them.

"Saturday is crazy, its a mad house, several hundred boats are out there on the bay," said Schott. "We've got 6 trips a day from now until the middle of May for trophy season."

A season heavily relied upon, and heavily enjoyed.
