Sussex County Airport Upgrades Resume

Posted:

GEORGETOWN, De.- Upgrades to the Sussex County Airport have resumed in Georgetown.

Senator Tom Carper (D-Delaware) visited the airport Friday to see the latest progress on the upgrades which began last year.

This project will extend the main runway from 5,000 feet to 5,500 feet. The project also includes improvements to the airport's approach through tree removal and upgrades to lighting and pavement striping. The runway extension will make the airport accessible to larger aircraft and improve safety and accessibility in less than ideal weather conditions.

"We want to see aircraft coming and going," says Carper. "The folks who own other aircraft, whether they're from this country or other countries, we want them to be able to land their large aircraft here."

Sussex County officials say they hope the runway extension will be completed in November.
