Antares Rocket Launches, Orbits in Space

Posted: Updated:

WALLOPS ISLAND, Va.- After two scrubbed launches and years of planning, the Antares rocket lit up the Eastern Shore of Virginia sky on Sunday.

"Everybody is like there's the smoke," said Morgan Riley, of Hampton, Va. "So I turned my binoculars to it. OK, it's happening, it's happening, it's happening. And it still took several seconds for that to sink in."

In 10 seconds, the unmanned rocket launched from NASA's Wallops Flight Facility, was moving at more than 7,000 miles per hour.

"Visually I can see for myself," said Naola Williams. "I can experience it. I can feel the charisma from the crowd. The people cheering and what have you."

Williams said she could not believe her eyes.

"It was only things we could dream of while watching it at the movies or television, but to look up into the sky to see a reality of how far men have gone and is going is a wonderful feeling," said Williams.

Riley said he was still in disbelief.

"I'm still surprised. I came here Wednesday, and on Saturday, and it actually went up."

NASA said the launch was successful. The Antares rocket will drift into orbit in outer space and will soon re-enter the Earth's atmosphere in a of couple weeks.

"This thing when its working is going to get a pay load to the international space station in 11 minutes from launch pad to docking," said Cliff Ashcraft. "I mean they can do take out with that time."
