Hoppes Now Permanent Fire Chief in Salisbury

Posted:

SALISBURY, Md. - After being a part of the Salisbury Fire Department for nearly 30 years, Richard Hoppes has reached the top.  The Salisbury City Council accepted the nomination for Hoppes to drop the interim title and become the new permanent fire chief.

"I'm elated and really relieved from a very long process but one that is worthy of the effort to be the fire chief of this great organization is one that I have worked my entire career to be part of and will continue to work just as hard as I did before today to continue to make the department the best that it can be," said Hoppes.

Hoppes had been nominated for the position in the past by Mayor Jim Ireton but the city council voted "no" to his appointment.  However, Ireton was persistent and brought Hoppes name to the new council once again believing he was the right man for the job.

"He's been our acting chief for the past two and a half year.  He is exceptionally qualified, he has his degree.  A 25 year veteran of the department.  Knows the city back and forth and is dedicated for fire and EMS and that is why he should be chief," said Ireton.

For new city council president, Jake Day, the move to name the new chief could mean good things for the city moving forward.  Day understands that many subjects will need intense debates but the appointment of the chief shows city leaders can work together.

"Everything is complex and we deserve to give everything that sort of hearing.  That said, where we stand today - we had an issue.  It had been discussed.  It had been debated.  We simply couldn't get to a resolution.  We got a resolution and I do think that is going to be indicative on how we are going to be able to move forward on items in the future."

The tenure for Chief Hoppes begins immediately.
