Agencies Practice Communication in Emergency Drill

Posted:

LAUREL, De.- Emergency agencies from Sussex County and Worcester County gathered in Laurel Wednesday for an emergency communications drill.

Technicians from both counties practiced communication methods using radio, satellite and other technologies. Officials say the goal of the drill is to prepare for an emergency like Superstorm Sandy or the Boston Marathon bombings.

The drill proved to be beneficial when the technicians discovered some difficulties communicating by radio.

"Things don't always go flawlessly and in an emergency we want to make sure they are as flawless as possible that is why we are here," said Ocean City Emergency Services Director Joseph Theobald.

Mobile command units from Ocean City, Sussex County and Delaware State Police were brought it for the drill. The Delaware National Guard was also involved.

"I think that we are proactive as possible to prepare for any scenario, whether it be a tornado or any natural event," said Theobald.

This was the third year the communication exercise was held on Delmarva.
