Del. Accidentally Sends Out Radioactive Alert

SMYRNA, Del. (AP) - Delaware Emergency Management officials say nearly 200 homes were mistakenly called to warn residents about a fictitious radioactive shipping accident during a drill.

Officials say 194 calls went out late Wednesday morning. A second phone call was made to the homes about an hour later informing residents of the error.

DEMA said the message from the Delaware Emergency Notification System advised residents that a cargo ship in the Port Penn area was leaking radioactive material.

Residents within a half mile of 5 S. Congress St. in Port Penn were told to shelter in place and tune to an Emergency Activation System radio station for further details.
