Dover, DE - Norfolk State pounded out 17 hits off three Delaware State pitchers in a 14-6 win over the Hornets at Marty Miller Field today. The Spartans salvaged the final game of the weekend series to improve to 16-24 overall and 11-10 in the MEAC. DSU, winner of the first two series game, fell to 29-13 and 18-3. The Hornets clinched the MEAC North title with their game one victory on Saturday.
Norfolk State opened the scoring on Sunday with a run in the bottom of the first inning. The run snapped a school-record 29-inning scoreless streak by Delaware State starter Elliott Gardner, who suffered his first loss of the season (5-1). Gardner allowed seven hits and seven runs, four earned, in four innings.
Delaware State answered with a run in the second inning to tie the game. Aaron Nardone walked with one out in the second. He stole second and moved to third on an error. Eddie Sorondo followed with a double to bring home Nardone and tie the game at 1-1
Norfolk State took control of the game with six runs in the fourth inning. Zach Markel had a two-run single in the fourth to give the Spartans a 6-1 lead.
Delaware State pulled to within 7-2 on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Haas in the fifth.
The Spartans responded with runs in the fifth and sixth innings to open up a 9-2 lead.
The Hornets scored a run in the seventh when Cameron Cecil led off the inning with double and later scored on a Mike Alexander ground out.
Delaware State pushed three across the plate in the eighth to pull to within 10-6. Nardone led off the eighth with his team-leading third home run of the season. The Hornets had the bases loaded with none out in the eighth when Cameron Onderko drove in Sorondo on a sacrifice fly to cut the Spartans' lead to 10-5. Cecil followed with another sacrifice fly to trim the Hornets' deficit to four.
Norfolk State answered the Delaware State threat with four runs in the bottom of the eighth to open up an eight-run lead.
Sorondo was three-for-five with a run batted in, while Cecil had two hits and a RBI in four at bats for the Hornets.
Norfolk State has handed Delaware State each of its three MEAC losses
this season, although the Hornets took the season series 6-3.
