Maryland senior lefthander Jimmy Reed has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week, the league announced Monday.
Reed turned in one of the best outings of his career on Friday at Duke. The native of Gaithersburg, Md., tossed his first career complete game shutout in the Terps' 1-0 victory over
the Blue Devils to setup a vital series victory for Maryland.
a pitching duel against Duke's Trent Swart, Reed got the upper hand
scattering five hits and striking out four. Reed was extremely efficient
throwing 69 of his 98 pitches for strikes
and allowed only one Duke base runner to advance past second.
It marks the second time this season Reed has gone the distance. At NC State on March 29, Reed went eight innings with four strikeouts in a tough-luck
loss. The senior also pitched nine-shutout innings against Miami on April 12, a game the Terps lost 1-0 in 13 innings.
The senior is one of five ACC pitchers to throw two complete games in conference action this season.
