Reed Named ACC Pitcher of the Week

GREENSBORO, N.C. Maryland senior lefthander Jimmy Reed has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week, the league announced Monday.

Reed turned in one of the best outings of his career on Friday at Duke. The native of Gaithersburg, Md., tossed his first career complete game shutout in the Terps' 1-0 victory over the Blue Devils to setup a vital series victory for Maryland.

In a pitching duel against Duke's Trent Swart, Reed got the upper hand scattering five hits and striking out four. Reed was extremely efficient throwing 69 of his 98 pitches for strikes and allowed only one Duke base runner to advance past second.

It marks the second time this season Reed has gone the distance. At NC State on March 29, Reed went eight innings with four strikeouts in a tough-luck loss. The senior also pitched nine-shutout innings against Miami on April 12, a game the Terps lost 1-0 in 13 innings. The senior is one of five ACC pitchers to throw two complete games in conference action this season.

Reed is the second Terrapin to earn ACC weekly honors this season, but the first pitcher to win ACC Pitcher of the Week since Scott Swinson in May of 2008. Charlie White earned ACC Player of the Week honors this season on Feb. 25.

This week, Maryland plays two midweek games beginning Tuesday at home against Towson at 4 p.m.
