LOUISVILLE, Ky.– For the first time in program history, the Salisbury University softball team has been named the top-ranked team in the nation by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Top 25 poll, the organization announced on Wednesday.
The Sea Gulls (35-2) claim the No. 1 ranking after going undefeated in the Capital Athletic Conference tournament last week to win their 18th CAC title, 17th consecutive. The 1-0 victory over Frostburg State University extended the team's winning streak to 24 contests.
Salisbury not only claimed the top spot but also secured all eight first-place votes and 200 points.
After previously being tied at No. 1 last week, Montclair State University and the University of Texas at Tyler fell to No. 3 and No. 5 respectively following losses last week. Trine University moved from the fourth spot up to the second while Emory University jumped up one spot to No. 4 to round out the top five.
With the No. 1 ranking, the softball team becomes Salisbury's fifth athletic program to be honored as the top team in the nation in a season.
Salisbury will now await the announcement of the NCAA tournament field next week to find out where they will be heading to open up play in its quest for a national championship. Teams will be announced for the championship during the selection show on NCAA.com, Monday, May 6 at 10 a.m.
