Police Probe Fatal Crash West of Millsboro

MILLSBORO, Del.- Delaware State Police say one man died and another was injured as the result of a single-vehicle crash that occurred west of Millsboro.

Investigators said the crash occurred at around 3:15 p.m. Tuesday, as a 1986 Ford F0150 pickup truck was traveling north on Jones Store Road south of Hardscrabble Road (SR20). Police said that for unknown reasons, the pickup went off the right side of the road and then came back into the northbound lane before the operator over-corrected. This caused the vehicle to roll on its left side and onto the roof before sliding off the right side and into a drainage ditch, authorities said. Investigators noted that prior to any first responder's arrival at the scene, both occupants were outside of the vehicle.

The pickup's two occupants, 54-year-old Jay E. Kerley and 57-year-old Thomas A. Phillips, both of Georgetown, were removed from the scene by EMS and transported to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital in Seaford. Kerley was treated and released. Phillips succumbed to his injuries and died Wednesday at around 10:20 a.m., police said.
The DSP Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing its investigation into the crash and an operator has not been confirmed. Police said alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.
