CAMBRIDGE, Md.- Twenty-four-year-old Cambridge Police Officer Carlton Brittingham Jr. has been indicted by a grand jury and faces a laundry list of rape and sex offense charges for an incident that authorities say occurred back in September.

"The attempted second -degree rape is the top count of 20 years. He is charged with the actual second-degree rape, and attempted second-degree rape and then he is charged with a myriad of sex offense charges: second-degree assault, false imprisonment, sodomy and attempted sodomy," said Wicomico County Assistant State's Attorney Kristen Schultz.

Cambridge Police Chief Ken Malik said the crimes Brittingham is being charged with occurred while he was off-duty in Dorchester County, but outside of city limits.

"I can tell you that the officer Carlton Brittingham Jr. was indicted by a Dorchester County grand jury and as a result of that indictment it's a felony indictment. He was suspended with pay on April 24," Malik said.

Due to a conflict of interest, the Wicomico County State's Attorney's Office is leading this investigation. Schultz said it is hoped that a hearing will be held in fall.

Brittingham has posted bail and was released from the Dorchester County Detention Center.
