INDIANAPOLIS– The Washington College softball team earned the seven seed and will be traveling to Ithaca, N.Y., to play second seeded Utica on Thursday afternoon at 4 o'clock in the opening round of the 2013 NCAA Division III Softball Tournament in the Ithaca Region hosted by Ithaca College.
The Shorewomen will carry a 26-17 record into Thursday's game versus the Pioneers. Washington claimed its first-ever Centennial Conference Softball Tournament title yesterday when they blanked Haverford, 9-0, in five innings due to the eight-run rule. Utica (33-12) reached the championship game of the Empire 8 Conference Tournament and received an at-large bid. It is the first time the Shorewomen and the Pioneers have met on the softball diamond.
In addition to Washington College and Utica, the other six teams in the region are top seeded St. John Fisher (33-12), three seed Lebanon Valley (32-5-1), four seed The College of New Jersey (26-13), five seed Cortland (28-14), six seed Penn State-Berks (36-3) and eight seed Western Connecticut (22-12).
The NCAA Division III Softball Championship is a double elimination tournament and team is guaranteed a minimum of two games. Washington will play either Lebanon Valley or Penn State-Berks on Friday. If the Shorewomen down Utica on Thursday, they will play the winner of the Penn State-Berks-Lebanon Valley on Friday at 4:00 p.m. If Washington falls to the Pioneers on Thursday, they would play at noon on Friday in an elimination contest.
