Del. Lawmaker Eyes Post-Labor Day School Start

DOVER, Del. (AP)- A Republican state senator is proposing legislation to study whether all Delaware public schools should wait until after Labor Day to start classes.

Sen. Gerald Hocker of Ocean View says the move could mean more money for Delawareans, particularly high school students with summer jobs.

Hocker says the Indian River School District is the only one of Delaware's 19 public school districts that started classes after Labor Day last year.

Carol Everhart, president of the Rehoboth Beach-Dewey Beach Chamber of Commerce, says earlier school start dates create serious staffing issues on one of the biggest beach tourism weekends of the year, Labor Day weekend.

"It's very difficult when there's still business to be had around here and there's no one here to staff or run this joint so it's a change that I would definitely encourage," said business owner Grant Willis.

Hocker's resolution, similar to legislation passed in neighboring Maryland, calls for a task force to study the idea and report its findings and recommendations by mid-January.
