PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Sophomore Dillon Simon (Pottersville, Roseau) and freshman Petra Kubesova (Prague, Czech Republic) have been named the Peninsula Regional Medical Center University of Maryland Eastern Shore Athletes of the Week for the week of May 6.
This is the fourth time this year that Kubesova has been recognized with the award, while Simon takes it home for the third time. Kubesova is distinguished after she was named the 2013 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Most Outstanding Runner for her efforts at the event. She shattered the MEAC record in the 5,000m, where she ran 17:15.04 to best the previous time by nearly 30 seconds. Kubesova also won the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 10:55.02, which was also a MEAC record setting time. Her work concluded with a second-place finish in the 1,500m with a time of 4:39.36.
Simon was the top performer for the men this week after he was named to the All-MEAC Second Team. The 2013 MEAC Most Outstanding Track and Field Performer claimed all eight points for the men's team at the event with his performance in the shot put. He heaved a second-place throw of 49.63m to stake UMES' best male finish on the day.
