Six Terps Earn IWLCA All-Region Honors

COLLEGE PARK, Md. No. 1-ranked and undefeated Maryland had six student-athletes selected to the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association All-Region Team, announced Tuesday.

Seniors Katie Schwarzmann, Alex Aust, Iliana Sanza and freshman Taylor Cummings were all named to the First Team All-South Region, while redshirt sophomore Brooke Griffin and freshman Alice Mercer earned second team honors.

Schwarzmann, who earned her second straight ACC Offensive Player of the Year honor Monday, was named to the first team All-South Region for the fourth time at Maryland. A native of Sykesville, Md., Schwarzmann became only the third player in league history to earn four career All-ACC honors. She enters the postseason having tallied 51 goals and 23 assists this year.

Sanza, who defended her title as the ACC Defensive Player of the Year Monday, earns her second straight first team selection on the All-Region team. She was also named to the All-ACC Team and boasts 28 ground balls, 15 caused turnovers, and 15 draw controls this season. A native of Cockeysville, Md., Sanza was recognized as an Inside Lacrosse Preseason All-American and is one of 25 Tewaaraton Award nominees.

Aust, who was named a second team All-American last season, earns her second straight All-Region honor. Among her many season highlights, Aust has boasted a team-high 60 goals and 48 assists in 2013, becoming a member of the Terrapin 100-point club. She is averaging 5.68 points per game as a senior captain and a Tewaaraton nominee.

Cummings followed up her first All-ACC selection this year with her first All-Regional selection. She also was awarded the 2013 ACC Freshman of the Year award and finished the season first among league freshman with 2.53 points per game. A native of Ellicott City, Md., Cummings was one of only two freshmen named to the All-ACC Team and tallied multiple goals in 12 of 19 games played in her rookie campaign.

For Griffin, who is a native of Edgewater, Md., this is her second major postseason award, after earning a spot on the All-ACC team during her freshman and sophomore seasons. This season, Griffin notched a hat trick against UMBC, scored five goals against William & Mary.

Freshman Alice Mercer also earned second team All-Region honors in her first season with the Terps. A native of Woodbine, Md., Mercer has been stellar as a defender for Maryland. She's also helped offensively, earning her first assist at Maryland against Dartmouth and then adding another in the ACC Championship game. She boasts 20 ground balls, four caused turnovers and 11 draw controls.

All six Terps, along with the other student-athletes named to these teams, are now eligible for inclusion on the IWLCA All-American teams, which will be announced on May 17.
