Md. Lawmakers Meet With Jail Officials

Posted:

BALTIMORE (AP) - Maryland Republicans say some additional steps are being taken to address security concerns at the Baltimore City Detention Center, and they are calling for more changes.

Several lawmakers toured the center on Friday and met with corrections officials to talk about the facility in the aftermath of last month's federal indictment of 25 people. They included 13 correctional officers who are allegedly involved in a contraband conspiracy.

Del. Michael Smigiel says officers from other facilities will be coming to the center to search correctional officers as they come to work.

Del. John Cluster says he is urging officials to install full body scans to make sure officers are not smuggling in contraband such as cellphones.

Del. Nicholaus Kipke says the building is antiquated and needs to be replaced.
