Va. Pencil Gun Suspension Leads to Policy Scrutiny

Posted:

SUFFOLK, Va. (AP) - Suffolk school officials are reconsidering a policy that resulted in two second-grade boys being suspended for pointing pencils and making gun noises.

The school board decided Thursday to form a committee to examine its zero-tolerance policy in regard to weapons. The policy was cited as the reason the two 7-year-old Driver Elementary School boys were suspended.

Superintendent Deran Whitney told the board he would make a recommendation on any necessary changes in June.

The boys were suspended for two days this week because the pencils they pointed at each other were considered weapons.

Wendy Marshall is the mother of one of the boys. She says they were pretending to be in the military and that neither felt threatened.
