Appeals Court in Va. Hears Health Reform Challenge

Posted:

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Liberty University's challenge to the Obama administration's health care law is back in the hands of a federal appeals court in Virginia.

A three-judge panel of the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond heard arguments in the case Thursday. 2 of the judges were appointed by President Barack Obama, the other by President Bill Clinton.

The Christian college claims the health care law violates the school's religious freedoms by forcing it to provide insurance that covers abortion-inducing drugs or pay heavy penalties.

The same appeals panel in 2011 ruled 2-1 that Liberty's lawsuit was premature. The Supreme Court upheld the law in another case last June, and in November the justices ordered the appeals court to reconsider Liberty's case in light of that ruling.
