Five Hornets Named to All-MEAC Baseball First Team


NORFOLK, Va.- Delaware State University juniors Cameron Cecil and Eddie Sorondo were selected to the All-MEAC Baseball First Team for the second time in their careers, while J.P. Frey (sr.), Aaron Nardone (jr.) and Mike Alexander (jr.) were also named to the first team in voting by league head coaches and sports information representatives announced Thursday.

DSU's Elliott Gardner (sr.), George Michael (fr.) and Hassan Evans (jr.) were selected to the All-MEAC Second Team.

Delaware State's five All-MEAC First Team members and eight total selections were tops among all league teams.

Cecil, selected as the All-MEAC third baseman, was fifth in the league with a .364 average during the 2013 regular season. He's also tops on the Hornets with 11 doubles this season.
The All-MEAC catcher, Sorondo is batting .254 with 10 doubles and 24 runs batted in this season.

Frey, a second baseman, is batting .354 and ranks third in the MEAC with 26 stolen bases this year. He was named to the All-MEAC Second Team in 2012.

Nardone, one of three All-MEAC outfielders, is hitting .354 and ranks No. 1 in the league with eight triples. He is Delaware State's career leader with 15 triples; and he tops the Hornets with three home runs this season. Nardone was also an All-MEAC Second Team selection in 2012.
Alexander, selected as the All-MEAC designated hitter, is second in the conference in hitting (.376) and tops in stolen bases (36). He was sixth among all NCAA Division I players in stolen bases and steals per game entering this week's games.

Gardner is 5-1 with a 2.47 earned run average this season. He set a Hornet record with 29 consecutive scoreless innings pitched this season.
Michael was 6-1 with four saves as a closer and spot starter in his first collegiate season, while Evans, a junior college transfer, is batting .369 and ranks fourth on the Hornets with 29 RBI as a first-year Hornet.

North Carolina A&T's Kelvin Freeman was selected as the 2013 MEAC Player-of-the-Year, while Savannah State's Kyle McGowin was named the league's top pitcher.

Savannah State's Mendez Elder is the MEAC's top rookie. The Coach-of-the-Year was presented to Savannah State's Carlton Hardy.
