REHOBOTH, Del.- Parking spots for cars are a precious commodity in Rehoboth Beach. To keep scooters out of the spots and off the sidewalks, there are designated parking areas near the beach.

But some scooter drivers want more options, while others think it could clutter a busy Rehoboth Avenue.

Come Memorial Day Weekend it will be illegal for Christine Igo to park her scooter on the sidewalk in Rehoboth.

"I'm gonna have to park on a side street, where I can't easily access where I want to go right away," Igo said.

Scooters won't be able to park in car spots either, there are designated scooter spots.

"My scooter cost me like $1,900, you want me to park it on a side street where someone can easily pick up my scooter and move it to wherever they'd like to park their suv or minivan, ya know," she said.

Many of the new scooter spots are near the beach but George Panarello says that isn't convenient for people who work further up the road.

"Why put them at risk walking several block away in the dark to the outlying areas when you could use the very close area when you walk out of your business and your job," he said.

Some scooters want to use the medians for parking but not everyone is sure of that plan.

"Since you park in the middle, I see people getting out of their cars and walking toward the beach and shopping and things so I guess, I think it might cause some congestion with pedestrians," Ginger Dornbus said.

But riders say their plan would be safer for everyone.

"We put the scooters out on the edges and still left plenty if center area for people to walk, wheelchairs to pass by and so forth. We're not endangering pedestrians," Panarello said.
