Greensboro, NC – The Greensboro Grasshoppers (20-28) used a two-run home run in the sixth inning and seven runs in the eighth inning to defeat the Delmarva Shorebirds (22-26) 11-2 on Sunday at NewBridge Bank Park.
The Grasshoppers struck first in the first inning. Anthony Gomez hit a one out single. Then, Jesus Solorzano doubled to the corner in left field and Gomez came around to score. Later, Matt Juengel hit a two out liner to left field to put Greensboro in front 2-0.
The Shorebirds got on the board in the fourth. Nik Balog reached on a line drive single into right field. He moved to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on a groundout. With two outs, Steel Russell singled to right-center to score Balog.
The Shorebirds tied the game in the fifth inning. Adrian Marin led off with a single to right field. He advanced to second on a wild pitch and third on a groundout. Then, Roderick Bernadina hit a slow tapper up the third baseline to score Marin.
Shorebirds starter Mark Blackmar lasted five innings. He yielded seven hits and two earned runs.
Greensboro took the lead back in the sixth inning. Cody Keefer hit a two-run home run to right field off reliever Dennis Torres.
Torres went two innings and allowed two hits and two runs. He did not allow a run in the seventh inning.
The Grasshoppers put the game out of reach in the eighth inning with seven runs on six hits against relievers Mychal Givens and Jose Nivar. The exclamation point was a three-run home run by Juengel.
Greensboro relievers Dane Stone and Frank Reed held the Shorebirds scoreless over the final four innings.
The Delmarva Shorebirds travel to Lakewood, New Jersey to begin a three-game series against the Lakewood BlueClaws on Monday, May 27. RHP Parker Bridwell is the scheduled starter for Delmarva.
