SALISBURY, Md.- The seafood case at One Fish, Two Fish in Salisbury is full of shrimp, fish and king crab legs. But one Delmarva staple is missing.

"It was very hard getting crabs and what we were getting the price was about double of the normal prices," said store owner John Connell.

Connell said large crabs are running about $35 a dozen, which is about $5 higher than his prices last year.

"Our customers are definitely discouraged by the higher prices and we feel their pain too because it's definitely affected our sales too," he said.

And what is being sold are not the plump local crab customers are used to buying.

"They might have the shell size but they're going be empty because they just shed not too long ago," Connell said.

Smaller, more expensive crabs, might still sell at the beaches but Connell said locals are not buying.

"Down in Ocean City you can pass that on to the customers, but here people are a little bit more discouraged to go ahead and buy crab if it's a little bit above the price they want it to be," he said.

Connell is optimistic that the crab supply will pick up and the price will go down just in time for the Fourth of July holiday.
