Woman Killed in Smyrna Crash

SMYRNA, Del.- Delaware State Police are investigating an early Thursday crash in Smyrna that claimed the life of a 22-year-old woman.

The accident occurred shortly before 6 a.m. on South DuPont Highway (U.S. Route 13) at the intersection of Black Diamond Road.

Police said 59-year-old Ernest Krygier, of Townsend, drove a 1999 Ford F450 south in the left lane of South DuPont Highway. Investigators said that meantime, a 2012 Nissan Versa, operated by 22-year-old Venessa McCausland, of Clayton, was traveling east on Black Diamond Road. According to police, the Nissan then crossed South DuPont Highway, directly in front of the Ford, and the front of the Ford struck the Nissan. Both vehicles came to rest in the grass median.

McCausland was pronounced dead at the scene. Krygier was treated at the scene for reported minor injuries. Both drivers were properly restrained at the time of the crash, according to police.

The crash remains under investigation.
