NEWARK, Del. (WBOC/AP)- Delaware State Police have arrested a trooper accused of filing false information in an arrest warrant.

Authorities say 38-year-old Shannon King of Newark, a 7-year veteran of the force who was assigned to DSP Troop 2 in Newark, turned himself in Wednesday to face a misdemeanor charge of offering a false instrument for filing. King, who has the rank of corporal, was released on his own recognizance and suspended with pay and benefits pending the outcome of the case.

State Police launched a criminal investigation in March after an internal review determined that King included false information in an arrest warrant he used to charge a suspect after a vehicle stop that led to the seizure of cocaine and marijuana.

Authorities say King falsely stated that he had field tested the suspected marijuana.

As a result of the investigation, charges against the defendant were dropped.
