Lifeguards Enforcing Dewey Beach Smoking Ban

Updated:

DEWEY BEACH, Del.- Lifeguards at Dewey Beach are starting to enforce the town's new beach smoking ban with a soft approach.

The lifeguards are letting violators off the hook with a warning, instructing them to smoke on the street rather than on the beach. The lifeguards, officially called "Dewey Beach Patrol," say everyone being told smoking is prohibited is putting out their cigarettes without an issue.

"We give out the soft warning and as long as they are compliant, we let them go about their business," said Rob Mason of Dewey Beach Patrol. "We let them smoke out in the street."

Dewey Town Manager Marc Appelbaum says smoking ban signage are on order and should arrive within the next week. When the Dewey Beach Patrol lifeguards hand out a ticket for a smoking violation, it will carry a $50 fine.
