HARRINGTON, Del. -  Delaware State Police are investigating an early Thursday crash in Harrington that claimed the life of a 16-year-old boy.

Troopers said the incident occurred around 1:25 a.m., as Daniel L. Richardson of Harrington was operating a Ford F250 pickup truck southbound on Fox Hunters Road, west of Hemping Road and attempting to negotiate a right curve. Police said the pickup went out of control and began rotating in a clockwise manner and left the east side of the roadway before striking an electrical pole and then a cement culvert. Investigators said the pickup then rolled over into a cornfield where it came to a stop. Police said Richardson, who was not properly restrained and the lone occupant, was ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Friends and family gathered at a makeshift memorial at the site of the crash Thursday afternoon. Tears were shed, hugs were exchanged. Friends snapped cell phone photos of the memorial decorated with a black cross, red roses and other symbols.

Richardson's grandfather spoke to WBOC.

"He was a happy-go-lucky kid and always had a good spirit," said James Richardson, Daniel's grandfather.

James Richardson says his grandson worked on a dairy farm and saved all of his money to buy a vehicle.

"I went up to the garage where his pick-up was towed in. I just hope his schoolmates and friends and family would look at how it's mangled and twisted up, it would maybe make somebody think you know. When you're driving down the road, you're driving a dangerous piece of equipment. It can hurt you and hurt somebody else," said Richardson.

The DSP Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing its investigation into this incident. However, investigators said alcohol may have been a factor.

Fox Hunters Road was closed for approximately two hours as the crash was investigated and cleared.
