WILMINGTON, Del.- Delaware law enforcement officers handed out 1,010 citations to unbuckled motorists during the 12th annual "Click It or Ticket" initiative that ran through the last half of May, the state Office of Highway Safety announced Friday.

The seat belt enforcement effort started May 13 and ended May 27 and involved traffic safety checkpoints and saturation patrols both day and night across the state. Approximately 30 state, county and municipal law enforcement agencies participated in the campaign to enforce state law, which requires all occupants in a vehicle be buckled up.

OHS officials said that for the sixth year in a row, officers participating in "Click It or Ticket" issued fewer seat belt citations than the year before since 2008 when officers issued a total of 2,347 citations in the two-week period.

During the "Click It or Ticket" enforcement period, officers statewide also arrested five people for DUI, issued 285 cellphone citations, recovered one stolen vehicle, made 22 drug arrests, seized two weapons, and made 10 felony arrests. Additionally, officers issued 53 citations to drivers for child restraint violations, issued 297 speeding citations, and issued 878 citations for a variety of other traffic violations.
