Man Walking Dogs Struck and Killed in Dewey Beach

Posted: Updated:

DEWEY BEACH Del.- Delaware State Police say a man walking his two dogs was struck and killed by a vehicle north of Dewey Beach on Saturday night.

Police said that shortly before 9 p.m., 68-year-old R. Brandon Jones of Felton was driving southbound in the right lane on Coastal Highway (SR1) just south of Old Bay Road.

Authorities said that meantime, 55-year-old Garabed D. Zakarian of Smyrna was walking with two dogs from the east side of the road to the west side crossing SR1 southbound.  As Zakarian stepped into the right lane of southbound SR1, he was hit by Jones' Jeep and thrown onto the southbound shoulder, investigators said.  The car immediately pulled into the parking lot of Sea Esta IV Motel where it came to a controlled stop.

Zakarian was pronounced dead at the scene. The two golden retriever dogs he was walking ran off after the incident and both have since been found uninjured.

Jones, who was properly restrained, was not hurt in the crash.

Police continue with their investigation into this incident. SR1 southbound, south of Old Bay Road was closed for approximately three hours as the crash was investigated and cleared.
